INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE SUMMER GARDEN
1. Summer garden — a favorite brainchild of Peter I. In 1704, he came up with the idea to create a large garden for himself, similar to Western European parks, and he outlined its original plan.
2. The fence in the Summer garden is famous. In connection with the construction of the Neva embankment in 1784 along the Northern side of the Neva fence of the Summer garden was organized by the architect Yu.Felten. This fence is considered one of the best architectural works of classicism.
3.There are legends about underground passages under the Summer garden. In 1924, the consequences of a severe flood were eliminated in the garden. And not far from the Coffee house found the entrance to the underground. The tunnel allegedly led to a room. But in the end, they decided to put it to sleep. During one of the restorations in the early Soviet years, something similar was discovered again. But after research, it turned out that this is just the remains of brickwork from water collectors for fountains.
4.In the XVIII century, the Summer garden had about 70 fountains, but they were severely damaged during the flood of 1777. Catherine II decided not to restore them. Several (eight) fountains were recreated during the modern restoration in 2009.
